A prominent manufacturer of bedding products in Queensland with customers in Queensland, New South Wales and the Northern Territory needed to upgrade their existing production scheduling system to gain better accuracy of stock control, provide more detailed information for their production workers and improve information available to upper management. Thanks to the implementation of Calido's Comet software, they were able to achieve all of the above as well as improve the average time required to produce goods. The Problem Their existing production software provided inaccurate inventory results forcing them to require warehouse personnel to physically check for the stock item. This was a problem for Customer Service and was impacting customer satisfaction. They also required the ability to provide specific contents information for each of the products to be printed on a "contents" label. As the existing production system was not accurate with stock control (nor make to stock generation) - stock takes were never accurate. The quilting section was identified as the bottleneck to the production process - improvements in this area would greatly improve the overall time required for production. The Solution Calido's production scheduling software Comet was selected for its functionality, integration, and affordability. A change of accounting system in the coming future meant the new software had to integrate with the new accounting package as well as the existing one. The objectives of this solution was to provide accurate stock information for customer enquiries, as well as improve control of the automatic stock generation. Several custom reports were required by management and mode detailed information was provided to production workers. The system runs in a Microsoft Windows based environment with client server technology. The Process Investigate - A requirements analysis should be performed at this stage - Calido can assist (by using our industry experience with manufacturing systems) prior to selecting a production management system. Innovate - Having established the requirements of the new system allowed for innovative solutions to particular problems. New reports were identified at this stage to be implemented once running live. Integrate - Calido implementation staff were responsible for the design of new integration modules to the accounting software. Existing hardware was utilised for barcode labels and production schedules. Implement - The system was installed and personnel were trained by Calido. A trial run was successfully performed prior to running live. Incubate - Periodic monitoring of the procedures and production management software allow for minor optimisations to be performed post running live. The Benefits The system enabled the manufacturer to achieve a high degree of stock accuracy within the first 6 months of operation. This resulted in a rapid responses to customer enquiries - now handled by office staff without having to approach warehouse personnel. More detailed information on production reports in a manner specific to the bedding industry allowed quilting personnel to run machines in a more fluent manner. The Cost Justification With the improvements in answering customer service enquiries alone they were easily able to justify the expense of implementing Comet. Comet is a subscription only product which does not include a prohibitive "outright purchase" price for the software. The yearly subscription charges include telephone support and updates throughout the year. Their customers will soon be able to track orders online as well as view current stock quantities over the weekend trading when their offices are unattended.
