Welcome to another edition of our monthly newsletter.

As you can see, this months edition is feature packed with information. Of particular interest is the operating system article where you can see how out of date your operating system software may be.

This months newsletter is a little earlier in the month to give you a last minute opportunity to order that much needed hardware before the end of the financial year.

Just a quick reminder (may help you for the end of financial year), Calido accepts upfront payment of services for software/internet development saving you 10% on standard development rates. Contact us for more information.

Yours sincerely,
Adam Ransley

SPAM - Unwanted Emails
Most of us get them... Emails telling you how to get rich quick using no money of your own or invitations to adult only web sites...

In an attempt to reduce the amount of email you received on a daily basis, try the following suggestions:

1) Get a hotmail or yahoo email account as a "junk" email box. Use this account to fill in forms etc on the web. Half the time that you use your email address on line it will end up shared or bought as a list from another company - only give out your real address to people/lists that you know are legit.

2) Do not list your 'real' email address on your corporate website. Try and have it listed as personsname @ company.com.au (note the spaces). This will force web "crawlers" to at least manually alter your email address (more often than not it will be deleted from their list as failing).

3) Don't reply to spam... Once you reply to spam, they add you to a known "live email address". Most of the emails are coming from a program that sits and waits for replies as well. Once you reply it knows it has a live email address. Once sold, these lists fetch "more" money than guestimated lists.

If all else fails and you need to use a spam blocker, the 3 best SPAM killers in my opinion are:

Metador v1.0 - it handles pop3 and exchange mail accounts. 95% accurate (only 6% misidentified, reduces with learning). Easy to install, no/little configuration required. $29.95 US (free trial)

Spam Net Beta 9 - good for outlook 2000 and outlook 2002. only 62% accurate, 0.7% misidentified. $Free

SpamKiller 4 - handles pop3, and MAPI compliant email box's (outlook, outlook express, eudora, netscape communicator) - 92% accurate 40% misidentified $39.95 US

My personal recommendation is metador. Easy to use, high success rate, low failure rate, free trial version, fast processing of emails, easy to use etc etc

Microsoft Plans to Lower Office Prices
Microsoft plans to drop the prices of its Office XP suite of software by up to 15 percent.

The price drop has been announced in anticipation of the release of the new version 2003, which has been scheduled for release later this year.

It is expected these changes will come into effect in September this year.

Operating Systems
Which operating System are you using ?
  • Windows .Net Server - released Apr 2003
  • Windows XP - released Nov 2001
  • Windows 2000 - released Feb 2000
  • Windows 98 - released Jun 1998
  • Windows 95 - released Aug 1995
  • Windows NT - released May 1993
  • Windows 3.1 - released Jun 1992
Yes! Windows XP has been available for nearly 2 years

In a business environment, if you are using anything less than Windows 2000, you are using old technology that is putting your office data at substantial security risk.

Approximately 90 percent of clients using earlier operating systems do no run the freely available updates provided by Microsoft to keep your computer's security up to date.

Computers are no different to other machinery that keeps your office/production environment running smoothly. More often than not, companies lease their expensive equipment - a practice you should also be using with your computer hardware.

Your company can lease new computer equipment over a 3 year term with all payments (in most circumstances) 100% tax deductible.

MYOB - Effects from the new federal budget
With the tabling of the 2003/2004 budget, the Federal Government has announced that income tax rates will change from 1 July 2003. The changes are significant and will affect customers that use MYOB Accounting Plus, MYOB Premier and MYOB AccountEdge.

MYOB is working closely with the ATO to create a payroll update, which will be made available to customers that register MYOB Accounting Plus v13, MYOB Premier v7 and MYOB AccountEdge v3.

Customers using earlier versions of these products should upgrade to the latest versions to ensure that their payroll software is compliant from 1 July 2003.
