Blaster Virus
W32.Blaster.Worm exploits the DCOM RPC vulnerability using TCP port 135. This virus and various other mutations have received a lot of media attention of late, and have already caused much damage. The worm primarily targets Windows 2000 and Windows XP machines (as the worm is not written to take advantage of Windows NT or Windows 2003 Server).

Microsoft has written an excellent article on the Blaster Worm, and you can download a free removal tool from the Norton website.

Prevention is always the best medicine with the latest virus definition updates from your virus software provider, and you can't beat the security of a hardware firewall.

During the first week of September, you can save on the following Netgear Pro-Safe Firewall Range:

     FM 114P      $299 (RRP $449)
     FR 114P      $199 (RRP $269)
     FVS 318      $249 (RRP $359)

(Prices include GST and subject to availability.)

We have access to a wide variety of IT products including mobile phones. If your company purchases mobile phones without being locked into a 1 or 2 year contract, we can supply the handsets at greatly reduced prices.
(Compare these prices to our competitors and you will be amazed...)

DVD Burners - What type should I buy?
DVD recorders are rapidly becoming more and more affordable for the home user with devices costing as low as $400. But don't go rushing in to purchase the first unit you see as there is quite a deal to understand before making the decision.

Lets start with the different types of DVD format: DVD-R, DVD-RAM, DVD-RW, DVD+RW and DVD+R. The first thing to note is that DVD-R and DVD+R disks can only be recorded once, whereas DVD+RW, DVD-RW and DVD-RAM disks can all be recorded thousands of times.

DVD RAM disks where created for the storage of computer data and so is a good selection if this is your intended application. (DVD RAM disks cannot be played on most DVD players.)

The difference between the + and - DVD media is similar to the BETA / VHS debate which ultimately the end user will decide on which will become the more popular.

DVD- technology (supported by Panasonic, Toshiba, Apple Computer, Hitachi, NEC, Pioneer, Samsung and Sharp) was the first to enter the market and is used for commercial DVD movies, great if your primary goal is to author movies.

After a few tweaks, DVD+ (supported by Philips, Sony, Hewlett-Packard, Dell, Ricoh, Yamaha and others) soon came into play and is mainly better for speed and convenience. (The DVD- media is generally cheaper to purchase than the DVD+ media.)

On a side note, if you are trying to make backup (storage) copies of commercial DVD's the best software I have seen is "DVD X Copy" which operates with little/no problems.

In today's market you are not forced to make the selection between + or - drives and media. Why? Because many of the newer drives support both.

There is a new Microstar drive released in Australia which handles DVD+R, DVD-R, DVD+RW, and DVD-RW. It has 4 MB internal buffer, Motorized easy touch tray loading, Firmware upgradeable, horizontal and vertical mounting, 4X Max. DVD+R and -R Write, 2.4X Max. DVD+RW Rewrite, 2X Max.DVD-RW Rewrite, and 12X Max. DVD-ROM Reading, 24X Max. CD-R Write, 10X Max. CD-RW Rewrite and 40X Max. CD-ROM Reading.

For the month of September, Calido is offering the MS-8404A DVD+/-RW 4x REWRITER DUAL Drive at the exceptional price of just $389 inc GST. There are a limited # of drives, so get in quick to avoid disappointment.
