Performance of Manufacturing Index
On a national scale, Australia's performance in the manufacturing arena is doing quite well. Our position as of January 2004 is better in all aspects (Production, New Orders, Employment, Inventories and Deliveries) than that of January 2003.

With respect to New Orders, construction material products, transport equipment and the textiles sectors all weakened, whilst food and beverages, paper, printing, publishing, clothing and footwear all performed better than the previous month.

Overall, there is a strong domestic demand which continues to support our local manufacturers, although the housing and motor vehicle industries have weakened slightly.

This information was summarised using the Performance of Manufacturing Index (as reported by the Australian Industry Group) which is a seasonally adjusted index based on production, new orders, deliveries, inventories and employment with varying weights.

Linux - not so free for some...
SCO Group Inc. is the original Unix software maker who last year filed a $3 billion lawsuit against IBM claiming they illegally added chunks of the Unix code to the freely available Linux alternative.

Since then, SCO has promised to file suit against larger corporations who are using this illegal code allowing applications that previously required SCO Unix, to run freely on Linux. In lodging against 2 randomly selected companies, this promise has finally come to fruition.

Apparently all SCO are trying to accomplish is to prevent certain "core" parts of their unique code from entering into the freely available Linux operating system.

It is expected this process will take many years of appeals and suits because the technical merit upon which the cases are based have never been tried before.

Will this mean a follow on of other suits against distributors of Linux, or is it merely a scare tactic? I guess we will never know.

Cheap Broadband - is it worth it?
With Telstra reducing its basic ADSL broadband package to less than $30 per month, many people are being drawn to sign up.

I cannot stress the importance of shopping around, and knowing exactly what you are getting, and how much it will cost if you go outside of the providers allowances.

For bigpond customers on the $29.95 per month plan, you only receive 200 Mb free before being slogged with a 15 cent per MB usage charge. This is where Telstra make the money.

Most home users would not go above 400 Mb per month if they are just sending emails and doing a bit of surfing (but the extra 200 Mb is going to cost you an extra $30) but if you are going to download MP3's, listen to the radio, or watch movie previews, you will easily go beyond this amount.

Of particular interest with Telstra is they count both uploads and downloads as your usage (which is double dipping because the owner of the site you are visiting is paying for the downloads as well).

In summary a mere 400 Mb of transfers per month with Telstra will cost you $59.95 - for which you can a get much better deal (on data allowances) with other providers.

If you are looking to upgrade to ADSL, I recommend you look into www.iinet.com.au and www.westnet.com.au - they have some good plans.
