As reported in Issue 22, a security flaw has been fixed but thats not all. I found the coolest thing with v9 to be the new encryption method known as AES. AES encryption is the Advanced Encryption Standard, which is the result of a three-year competition sponsored by the U.S. Government's National Institute of Standards (NIST). This encryption method, also known as Rijndael, has been adopted by NIST as a Federal Information Processing Standard. Unlike the Winzip v8 encryption method (which is not 100% fool proof with todays computing), the 128 bit AES encryption is estimated to take 149 trillion years to crack - don't even bother with the 256 bit encryption :) If you have data you would like to securely compress/backup, Winzip v9 is the right product for you. You can download a trial version online at www.winzip.com or purchase directly from Calido. (Site discounts available.)
What are they? Trojans can be described as any program that is represented to do one thing, but performs other tasks unknowingly to the user. (The name trojan comes from the greek period where the trojan horse was sent as a gift but through the night an army came out of the horse to conquer the city. What damage can they cause? The damage caused by trojans can vary from simple keystroke loggers attempting to steal your valuable passords and credit card informtion to telnet servers allowing remote access to your computer, ftp servers allowing files to be sent from your computer, destruction of files on your computer and email address extractors. This is by no means an exhaustive list, rather the surface of some of the abilities of these malicious codes. How can I get infected? This list could go on forever, but to give you a selection of methods how you can get infected: receiving files Via ICQ or other messaging services, receiving information via IRC, any sort of attachments (email or other), people using your computer, access to certain websites (mostly pornographic, hackers etc), P2P programs and fake software. How do I know if I'm infected? Some trojans operate transparently to the user and hence can go undetected for long periods of time. Other trojans operate with an extremely high dependance on user interaction by coninuously opening various web pages for the user to view. It is also possible for your computer to try and high charge phone numbers that profit the company who created them. Basically the only way users normally detect they have a trojan is by the computer doing "not normal" things. How can I get rid of them? Anti-virus software packages are quite good at minimising the risk of trojans but there is a new breed of software surfacing that specialises in trojan detection and removal. This Anti-Trojan generation of software is built to detect and remove trojans and attempt to repair the damage they may have caused. There is a free online trojan scanner available at: www.trojanscan.com which is quite good at detecting the more common trojans. To protect yourself from the latest trojans, you should invest in some of the better known trojan software packages such as: TDS-3, Trojan Hunter and Pest Patrol. Of these, I would recommend Trojan Hunter as the best all purpose, suitable for users at all levels, and good bang for buck. This information is provided as is, without any warranty of any kind. It is up to the end user to determine the best method of trojan removal and how to respond in the event they become infected.
It is imperative that your company includes regular windows updates as part of your IT rollout. It is as simple as sending all users to the Windows update website, or alternatively distributing the patch via an email. Your antivirus software is now only one of the small steps required to keep your computer safe from the internet "baddies".
