The coming year will see many exciting new developments at Calido whilst continuing to expand our consulting/contracting operations. Several new products are scheduled for release during 2003 so keep an out for those as the year unveils...

Free Online Virus Scanner
Are you scared that you might have a virus but don't own a virus scanner?

Trend Micro have a free online virus scanner that can detect and attempt to repair any viruses that exist on your system.

UPS Power Supplies
Interested in purchasing an un-interruptible power supply? There is a great article on selecting the correct capacity at http://www.opti-ups.com/pdf_file/RuntimetableUS(outline).pdf.

In short, make sure you:
  • Identify the devices you need to operate on battery backup
  • Know how long you require the devices to operate (on battery)
  • Allow 30-50% for future system expansion
  • Do not connect un-necessary items such as printers and speakers to the battery backup unit
In the same manner as virus software, you never appreciate the advantage of a system such as this until after it is too late. How precious is your data in the event of power spikes, surges or failures?

Wireless Networking
Wireless networking is the use of Radio Frequency (RF) technology to connect workstations to a Local Area Network (LAN) or Wide Area Network (WAN).

The benefits of wireless networking include; increased mobility, simple and flexible installations and ease of scalability.

One of the primary uses for wireless networking is that it adds to the mobility for laptop users. Since the LAN is wireless, a user only needs to be within range of a node to begin operation on the local area network - there is no need to plug into a socket.

Security is of the greatest concern to wireless networks as you are not limited to a physical point to connect to the network. Instead, someone sitting in a car in front of your office has the potential to connect to you network.

Several important steps you need to take to ensure your network remains secure are:
  • Use NetBEUI rather than TCP/IP for file and printer sharing.
  • Implement secure file sharing methods (share only what you need to and password protect it).
  • Enable WEP encryption (with at least 128 bit)
  • Use WEP for data and authentication.
  • Do not allow remote administration of your router/firewall/access point.
  • Use MAC address based Access and Association control.
  • Don't send the ESSID
  • Don't accept any ESSID
